Create and mark quizzes

Publish reusable questions, set passing rules and attempts, then review student answers.

Use a quiz to check understanding or require a passing result before a student continues. Questions live in the quiz library; each use in a course has its own dates, passing rule and attempt limit.

Prepare the questions

Open Quizzes and choose Create quiz. Give it a name, write the instructions and add choice or written questions. Choice questions need at least two options and a correct answer. Use multiple answers only when students should select more than one option.

Wait for the draft to save, then choose Publish version. Check that a version number appears. A saved draft alone cannot be selected for a course. Later edits need another published version.

Add the quiz to a course

  1. Open Course builder → Build, add a quiz step and choose Choose quiz.
  2. Search for the quiz and select it. Taskpipe attaches its latest published version. Check the name and version shown on the step.
  3. Choose whether students see every question or a random selection. The number drawn cannot exceed the question pool.
  4. Set the course rules below, wait for changes to save and try the step in Preview.

You can also choose Create new quiz from the selector and return to the course after publishing it. Adding a quiz to a course template prepares future groups; edit a group's copy to change that group.

Choose the rules

SettingChoice and effect
Passing ruleAnswer every question, Percentage correct, or Minimum correct answers. A required correct-answer count cannot exceed the questions shown.
Attempt limitLeave empty for unlimited attempts, or enter a positive whole number.
Release feedbackImmediately, After grading, or At a set time. For a set time, supply both the date and time in the course time zone.
Opening and deadlineControl when students can start and submit work. Check actual dates in the group.
When can students continue?Allow continuation right away, after the deadline or after approval. Passing and date rules still apply.

Written answers that count towards a score need teacher marks. After grading also requests a written review when the passing rule only requires completion. Submission, passing, teacher approval and showing feedback are separate steps.

Mark submitted work

Open a student's Course record, expand the quiz and choose Quiz grading. Choose the student and attempt, read each answer, mark written answers correct or incorrect and add feedback where it helps. The group's grading view also brings together responses waiting for review.

Marks save as you work. Wait for saving to finish, then choose Finish grading or Finish & next. Saving marks alone does not finish the review. If finishing fails, keep the page open and retry; saved marks remain. Check the student's result and any remaining approval rule afterwards.

If a student has used their allowed attempts, open that quiz in their course record and use Allow one more attempt when available. This adds one attempt for that student.

Change a quiz already in use

Publishing a library version does not replace every course's selected version. Check the version on the course step before changing it. Existing attempts keep their original questions. Passing-rule changes can affect unfinished attempts; completed progress remains recorded. Review template updates before changing several groups.
