Groups

Run a course for a set of students with its own dates and settings.

A group is one run of a course for a set of students. It has its own student list, dates, lessons and sales page. Open Cohorts in the course, choose Create cohort, then give the group a name and time zone. It starts as a draft.

Group settings

Start with a name and time zone. You can then set a seat limit, dates to show on the website, a place, visibility and a price. Leave the optional fields empty for a first group; the table below explains what each setting does and where it applies. Public dates do not open or close lessons. See Selling courses for prices.

Check the group's Preview before publishing. Course release lists anything you must fix first. After publication, students in the group can start and Taskpipe starts sending their access emails. Add students from the group's student list. An email marked sent does not prove it reached an inbox.

Field rules and course defaults

Use course settings means the group follows the course choice. Choose a different value on the group if it needs its own setting.

FieldValue when created / limitWhere it applies
NameRequired, not empty. This group; shown to managers and students.
Time zoneRequired. The form suggests your browser's zone; choose a valid time zone.Dates on this group.
Seat limitEmpty means no limit; otherwise a positive whole number. This group. You cannot lower it below the number already enrolled.
Public datesEmpty; start and end are optional.Website display only, not lesson access.
PlaceOptional. Country uses a two-letter code.This group.
Listed / sales pageUse the course choices until changed here.Public list and sales page.
Email languageUse the course language until changed here.A student's chosen language takes priority when known.

A group can be a draft, published or closed. You can publish a draft after Course release finds it ready. A published group can receive more students while seats remain. Only published groups marked as listed appear in the external group list. If a group uses the course's visibility choice, changing that choice also changes the group. A choice set on the group stays as it is.

If an access email fails, use Retry access emails in Course release. This retries email delivery without publishing again.

Move or remove a group

Moving a group to another course keeps its students' access and progress. Check the destination course before moving it. Deleting a group is permanent and is blocked when it has student or enrolment history.

Changes to the template

Editing the course used to create this group does not change the group's lessons or sales page. Template updates explains how to replace either copy and which student work and dates stay in place.
